Absolutely no way should any sites be censored regardless of content.

This is a prime example of how our freedoms are gradually eroded away.
By dishing out some internet horror story, "they" are getting you to demand censorship! And you seem to have fallen for it, hook, line, sinker, and copy of the angling times!

This is a very crafty tactic, which is becoming ever more prevalent, especially over here in Britain, and I might add, dangerously so.

As Sulaiman said further up the post, almost everything over here can land you in the clink, and why? Because the public asked for it ! I darent even have a stanley knife (box cutter) in the toolbox of my car in case some do-gooder, thinks i might possibly injure someone with it!!!

Almost everything on this site, could be regarded as dangerous by somebody somewhere, and it could be argued that the site be shut down. Where will it end?

I doubt there will ever be a right answer to this sort of issue, personally I'm anti censorship, bear in mind that this sort of info has always been available in paper based books (remember them), the internet has just made it more available if you want the info you can always find it if you look hard enough. People die every day for any number of reasons, mainly not their choice/fault so why get so wound up about people that die when it IS their choice. Education and help would be a better bet than censorship IMHO. Why don't medical professionals get accounts on these suicide websites and try and help people rather than ban the sites and drive the users underground beyond help?

Martin.

I support everything that Les has said.

To which I'll add a quote from Hermann Goering, while he was awaiting trial for war crimes at Nuremberg:

"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."*

* Hermann Goering, April 18 1946, quoted in Gilbert GM, The Nuremberg Diary, New York, 1947.

That's exactly why we're anti-censorship here. Enlightened self-interest smile

Not true,
If anyone were to post detailed instructions on how to make for example high explosives from supermarket products, we would INSTANTLY shut it down.

I think that would be correct - but it's censorship.

I guess that's true, as moderators we've deleted several such threads in the past.

You forgot the rod, but I fixed it for you. wink

Other than that little error you are spot on, this is how they get the sheeple to go along with losing rights.

It's not just Goering that said it is easy to make people give up rights Hitler himself said if you make it about protecting the children the public will give up any right no matter how absurd the idea as nobody wants to be seen as supporting the hurting of children, here in Australia they have tried to use 'protecting the children' as a reason for censoring the internet.

If you really believe the internet should be censored because you don't agree with something on it then you should do everybody a favour and cancel your internet connection, then you won't have to see things you disagree with nor be able to tell others what they can or cannot see!
Or you could just NOT visit sites that you do not agree with!
Simple really, each human being is responsible for their own actions and they should accept that responsibility and not try and blame others for anything, nor should they try and force their views onto others!

Keep your wowsers off our browsers!

It's true, but that's self-censorship. We're not trying to prevent people from having access to such information, we just don't want it here.

There's a big difference between telling someone they can't burn a flag in your living room, and telling someone they can't burn a flag at all.

The philosophy of free speech has been circumvented before:
Link2
it is a very old story twisted by more than a few King's Scribes...

Bully metaphysics or Coercive marginalization without due process?
It is a false dilemma.

Indeed, the internet's "freedom" has been presented as a "problem to be solved" by some, but in reality it merely shows parts of the world many may choose not to see.

Even if you don't agree... In reality...
one can't prevent people's decisions if they are willing to pay the consequences.

In Communist China they also filter any "disharmonious" or "dishonoring" web content.

The problem isn't the internet, the problem is kids aren't being taught how to deal with life's problems. They spend too much time inside playing videogames etc that they don't learn social skills. People who kill themselves over a block of text already are either emo or cutters anyway. They need IRL help, not to have their virtual mouths duct taped. Besides, they'd just continue talking about death on an IRC anyway. There's a LOT less mercy on an IRC than on a forum.

I will not sign your petition. Give a government an inch and it'll take a mile. Did you know the US constitution originally said no direct taxes to the people? Well the government needed money to feed soldiers and asked the people for a small tax. They obliged. Now skip ahead 180 years. People pay nearly 20% of their earnings to a dysfunctional government. I mean really? 9 trillion dollars in debt? Something ain't right...

Also about the instantly shut down thing... Yeah that's not true. There are hundreds of pyrotechnics websites and forums that don't get "shut down". There are even websites that explain how to make meth that have been up for nearly 10 years. So long as you're not selling or trading precursors to explosive or controlled compounds, or planning murders there isn't anything anyone can do to you. Rotteneggs, totse, hell even e-how has guides on making bombs from cold packs and sparklers. Nothing "they" can do, and I'm all for keeping it that way.
