To get 120 BPS from an AC static-gapped SGTC, you would need to set the gaps as far apart as possible while still constantly sparking. That way, the capacitor only fires at Vmax (the crest of the sine wave) and -Vmax (the trough of the sine wave), meaning the capacitor fires twice per cycle. In the US the line frequency is 60 Hz- so twice per cycle would mean 120 firings per second (BPS). If the gap is set too close, it will fire before it is fully charged (which not only results in less-than-maximum discharge, but also the peak of the NST output getting wasted in the spark gap rather than stored the capacitor!), and if too far, it will not fire reliably. So after much tuning and fiddling, I am able to get 19" streamers, when using a break out point. However I'm sure I can do better if I get a smooth toroid, perhaps a spun aluminum one. Heres the issue I am having now, when cranked up fully I am getting nice long streamers from break out point but i am getting random smaller ones at the same all around the toroid, would it help to change the toroid out with a small spun aluminum one and retuning? thoughts?

I think this is another area where size counts. If I am correct there is a relationship to capacitance and size (as well as design obviously). but going small won't satisfy the tuning you have achieved. When you re-tune; you'll tune down to the smaller capacitance. (IMO) in other words; you MAY have gotten the best you're going to get at this point - I would imagine going smaller would defeat your purpose.
IF you could smooth your top-load often you get smoother discharges rather than the "crack" discharge from one with edges acting as breakout points but still you need that size relationship.
I have tried what you proposed and when I went smaller I was all out of "optimum" tune. The "pie-plates" may have looked funky but they got full length. The beautiful spun toroid (that was smaller) looked pretty but the streamers just never made the length.
It seems this starts to become a money issue also.
There MAY be a tuning mechanism out of this but I didn't find it. - Perhaps a major alteration in additional complementary?

I know we have very similar coils, but it is still interesting to me how we are getting nearly identical results...


One thing to try on the breakout...try moving your breakout higher and a bit further out...I have found I can eliminate the issue you are describing by laying a long phillips screwdriver balanced on top of one side of the toroid (with about 6" sticking out over the edge). I have also found a soda can balanced on the outer edge works well too. If you set it in the center, you get a lot of additional small streamers around the toroid...move it to the outer rim balanced on top, and they start getting more concentrated.

So i covered my toroid with aluminum tape and it did improve the performance a bit, but know I am apparently messing with my homes alarm system, might be time to move the coil and find a better way to ground the coil.

when I say improved, I mean streamers are a bit more constant though still getting random smaller streamers from the side of the toroid. I change my breakout to a rounded piece of copper wire that is about 8" tall and 2" in diameter and got some pretty decent results.

HM, I still cant quite get the solid streamers like the one in your pic. Mine are still a bit more random like Quicksilver spoke about.

I think moving the coil away from the wall and lowering it in relation to the ground plane may change or affect this. I guess part of the fun is trying different things for me.
