Postage for something that big to the UK would probably cost more than buying one new in this country i think. I have been emailing sign shops asking if they have any old NST's. Most have not got back to me but 1 said they have a couple of 5kV ones. Is 5kV enough for a small coil?

It depends on the current. Multiply the voltage and current output to get the wattage and compare transformers that way. It's probably 5kv at 15 or 30mA which will make for a pretty small coil, yes. At best you should expect maybe 5-6 in streamers. It all depends.

To give you some perspective, I have a 9kv 30mA NST (270 watts) and I can get over 10in sparks when they arc to a grounded wire. I could probably get more with a bit more fine tuning.

I've got a 9kv 60mA that I can sell you but like you said postage will be expensive.

I was also wondering what would happen if i plugged a US transformer into UK mains. Running at 230V here, would i fry it?

yes, it would draw huge current and trip the breaker (or melt the primary winding) if the secondary won't break down first because of the overvoltage.

i tried a 15kV obit, solid state, for my SGTC and it wouldn't run it. i eventually tracked down a NST on ebay and this worked great. it took nearly a year to find one in UK or pay £160 for a new one from signbuyer.co.uk

yeh, i though so. I guess a cheap 110v to 230v would work ok though?
