And just to clarify, you are saying the tuning on the primary should be adjusted in 1/8" segments on the coil (I did not know it was that sensitive)?
I have tried playing with the coupling and tapping (with extremely limited experience doing so), and that is the best I have gotten so far. Spark gap is set pretty narrow (about 4mm), because my safety gap fires off if I go wider. May need to re-assess my safety gap setup.
Basically, I set up the safety gap by adjusting it about 1/2mm wider than it will arc with just the NST hooked up to it.
