I've seen people just apply wall filler on the corrugated aluminum vents...then you sand it and varnish it, makes a nice strong smooth topload. Probably anything that can mold and then harden.
I thought of using a pool tube once, but decided not to because of how uneven it was...A tire tube would be best if you went with the inflatable option.

Fiberglass is fairly difficultg to get hold of in malaysia, perhaps, instead, those plaster of pairs strips of cloth? I forgot what they are called, but they are used to make casts when people have broken limbs. you simply soak in water and after a while it hardens...
