I just came back from holiday (lucky me!) and noticed that the rubber inflatable inner tubes people use for swimming would make a near perfect toroid.
I've seen some fairly small 12" ones as well as massive ones that may be suitable for large TC's that are too big for regular aluminum ducting. The tube itself is near perfectly smooth and very lightweight. Would it be possible to cover the ring with layers of aluminum tape or similar? Is my idea even remotely feasible? Thanks a bunch, mike

You could use it as sort of a form. just cover it with some sort of fibreglass and epoxy and use this instead to cover it with aluminium foil, that would gibe a nice toroid without risk..

This is an excellent idea and has been done quite extensively. The best way to do it is to cover it with a very low oz. cloth of fiberglass and resin, and then coat with aluminum tape. Maybe you only need the resin as Grenadier mentioned.
I haven't done it myself, but have seen others who have done this. I believe D&M voltage who made toroids like this used this exact method.

WOW, thanks for the responses. In order to stop the tube deflation simply leaving the "input air nipple" uncovered should do the trick; simply blow it up when the pressure is getting low. Fiberglass is fairly difficultg to get hold of in malaysia, perhaps, instead, those plaster of pairs strips of cloth? I forgot what they are called, but they are used to make casts when people have broken limbs. you simply soak in water and after a while it hardens...
