You seem to be putting a lot of work into this, how do you know it will not disintegrate itself over a large area within a minute of applying power?

I hope it will not but it seems like there is a lot of untested things going on at the same time.

I have 14 years experience building flying models (of one kind or another), that's why ;)

Seriously though, you bring up a good point. Many of the structures I have built have been tested (at least in a crude sense..) Before building the wings, I made a rough mock-up with the honeycomb lattice and shear tape in place, which have proved themselves for at least 4gs (around 44 lbs, but the aircraft will be programmed not to exceed 3G) without crumpling or signs of fatigue. Granted, at 44lbs, there was a little flexure. The fusalage -was- capable of supporting my entire weight (175 lbs) until I gutted the bulkheads and removed the paper covering. The fuselage mockup was capable of supporting at least 50 lbs before crumpling. This is not intended to survive a crash or extreme maneuvers, but should hold up to forces that would be encounted within the normal flight regime.

As for the software/avionics/control hardware, it will be tested in-the-loop with xplane (around $60.) I will model the UAV in xplane, and feed the video and instrument feeds into the onboard computers. The output of the servos will be fed into a hacked $15 walmart usb joystick so that the servo response/delay will be accounted for in xplane. In this manner, I will be able to perfrom the rough tuning of the inner and outer loop PID controllers for the autopilot in addition to testing the optical flow tracking.

The real-world tests will happen in stages.

RC manual flight
Full avionics installation
Fly by wire heading and attitude control using the horizon finder routines
Autonomous Waypoint navigation
Automated takeoff
Precision approach to targets using optical flow tracking/phase-based image correlation
Automated landing

The wings will sag until I put in the honeycomb lattice and covering, but you get the idea. The tape you see is not the shear-tape, rather it's masking tape used to hold things together as the expoy cures. I have not even begun to work on the tail cone, pending the arrival of the ducted fan (around 4-5 lbs of thrust max as opposed to the previous fans providing 2lbs.)

The wings were accidently thrown away by housing as the cleaned the place up for the incoming summer students. Not to worry, I have a better set of wings in mind.

I also created a project website:

Best of luck with the new ones!
