I am going to post how I ended up getting it working so that if anyone else wants to do somethign similar they won't have to go through what I did...
The original goal was to create a simple intranet ftp server that had a home read/write directory for each user, and a global shared read only for everyone but me... I started out by installing proftpd, adding a few users, and locking them to the home directory.
Then I created a file in /etc/init.d called 'startup' which contained
mount --bind /data/secondary/ftp /data/primary/FTP-shared/peter/data
mount --bind /data/secondary/ftp /data/primary/FTP-shared/mike/data
mount --bind /data/secondary/ftp /data/primary/FTP-shared/user2/data
mount --bind /data/secondary/ftp /data/primary/FTP-shared/clement/data
cd /folding
./FAH504-Linux.exe -forceasm &
(I also added in the folding at home client so it would fold on its own)
and ran
update-rc.d startup defaults
to tell it that it was supposed to run the file on boot
so I had a folder on the disk mounted in everyone's home directory, all I needed was a little security
So I then chmod'ed the whole mess to 775 rights...
Then I put all of the ftp users in the 'nogroup' group, and my in the 'users' group
So now when I login I can do whatever I want to the global share, but no one else can
A few tips if you are having problems... The chmod is a pickey little command, you usually need to add the -R to make it do anything,
chmod -R 775 /data/secondary
and even then sometimes it just sits there. Rebooting a few times seemed to solve the problem of the 'well there weren't any error messages, but it didn't do anything problem
Also, I recomend that you set the user in the fstab (if not the group as well), as I had tons of problems changing ownership of files... The umask seems to be vital for anything to work as well.
