PM just reminded me of something.....

Not to march too far from the subject - but I would take a wager that either NZ, AUS, UK or USA - [we will see] within this year, some legislation regarding our hobby, that in some manner is restrictive - substantially beyond what exists now. Any takers?

I am NOT talking about obvious weapons of course. I'm talking about objects that some @^%&* abuses and ends up in the press.

Notice how through deceptive advertising the "600,000 volt" weapon is accepted by the public as legitimate. I would think that's a step away from
"A Supposed Educational Device can Electrocute our Children in a Classroom".
"The supposed 'TESLA COIL' as it's called is actually a device SO lethal that it can produce enough deadly power to {you supply the hysteria}."

I don't see that happening with coils any time soon. Lasers? Definitely.

I see everyday in the news gross errors of magnitude order on everything that can be measured. These absurd values are just another example of the general ignorance about these matters among the advertising and news people.

I just want to put this note here. Don't lock a thread because it is off topic. That last one that got locked had a pretty good discussion going.

We'll let's put it right back on topic.

QUOTE:
"In short, it cant. Its odd that stun gun manufacturers have gotten away with this marketing ploy for years."

There appears to be several basic methods of making a stun gun.
One appears to be a simplistic technique of jumping the voltage and frequency.
Another appear to be allowing a rather substantial amount of capacitive discharge to utilize relatively higher current (cattle prod). from my limited perspective many of these are AC.
Another seems a mid-ground where cap-discharge is used with a lower current is fed to a "final coil" as a pulse.

All in all though, where can these marketing people get a figure that is a quarter million or more volts without direct false advertising? IS there something that prevents someone from measuring one of these in a civil suit for misleading advertising? They certainly aren't a static-electrical device.
