Someday it would be nice to carefully cut the bulb off at the botton and fill it with mercury and measure its inductance.

There is a reason why the US CFLs explode more tongue - thats because of the doubler used, incase of a short-circuit the caps see huge AC ripple and negative voltages, but the fuse rating is often too big to trip the current so the caps overheat and explode. I think putting reverse diodes across the caps would fix that, but that's out of the scope of chinese cost cutting.

While Incandescent Light Bulbs are banned, Halogen Lamps are still available and are practically the same except the consume less power and have a longer life span. The warmness of the light is, as far as I know, the same.

Edit: and I've never seen a light bulb explode

Where do you live? I never heard of a "Incandescent Light Bulbs ban" I still buy them for other rooms and bathrooms and so forth. I only use CFLs in my room fr the ultra-bright lighting :D

In 2014, filament light bulbs will be baned. I hate that, it's like the drinking ban in the 20s, it's only going to make people use them more!

hmm.. Ive heard something simular here too, but the data was set for 2012,
there was no official news, but its something that was heard around here locally, so dont count on my word competly. (I live in canada btw)

so far though, I didnt have any CFLs fail on me at all (either quitely or explosivly) I used to have one in my room (ive gutted it for the insides angry ) and now I have a pair of full sized flurecent bulbs in its stead.
(60W total I think) and I plan to replace those at one point with LED lighting (make my own system)

I personally highly dislike CFLs for one reason the take time to light up I want to solder something and I have to wait for the tube to warm up…
Anther reason is something I learned when I went to regional’s in sci fair. The student next to me had done research on CFLs last year she determine that the filament in these light don’t last as long as normal bulbs something about on off cycles. She went to internationals last year (me with my petty disk launcher not a chance). This year she develop a way to run the bulbs with microwaves, the tubes that the filament burnt out she would put in a small faraday cage and have an microwave antenna in it (her dad runs some physic lab she had acces to really great lab equipment) she of course won a few grant and went to internationals again and she got a patent offer for it too. Hmmm vary interesting idea. But still don’t like the warm time.
