Most laser CNC's I've seen use the methode of your scetch, Like this one.
The reason behind this is that you do not need to move a large mass or overcome a large force.
In a regular CNC the drill has significant resistance while milling.
With the moving table methode you can make the setup much more rigid.
But because a laser cnc only has to move the laser head you can easily use the methode of your drawing.
This way the whole system would remain relative light, you can achieve greater speed and more accuracy as there is minimal strecht of components due the low momentum.

Btw I didn't mean disconnecting the motor while it was running, disconnect it when power is off and then test.
Its a simple H-bridge structure so you would see the input voltage on each of the succesing connector points if the chip works correct.

Lethal Shot, This is what I thought. Because the moving table method would be simple, my drawing would have been based off of low mass to move around, however these are rather high torque steppers.

I dont think you can find smooth rails at most hardware stores...I know you can get black metal rods (commonly titled music wire) or possibly aluminum, but they arnt near as smooth as what scanners use. I might have to just hope a fine grit sand paper and lub can get a metal rod from homedepot low friction :)
