What would be a good VT for a single VT "Beginners" VTTC
Further more does anyone know of any half decent VTTC plans that use a single tube and aren't overly large? Thanks

You should look for a triode tube, preferable with a plate dissipation around 100-300 watt, the heater atleast at some 20-30 watt and the higher voltage it can manage is good, but a few kV is best. Best get one in a glassenvelope so you can check plate heating while testing.

For the oscialltor, most uses a class c amstrong osciallator, its the one I have used in my vttc, for a single tube, just remove one of the two in my drawings f.ex. Link2

good luck with your vttc, you should also read steve wards vttc faq for some good design guidelines, Link2

Build Steve Ward's dual 811A off his site. This was my first VTTC. I built it exactly like his schematic and it worked the first time I powered it up, no problems. (well my grid feedback resistor got way too hot, but whatever)

Its a pretty easy build for a first VTTC.

(you don't have to use two 811A's though, you can just have one)

I don't know how reliable the list is but there is a list of "recommended" vacuum tube on this page. Link2

I also agree about checking out Steve Wards site also. There is some good info there.

I saw that list myself, not really very useful without more information on the individual valves. Does "recommended" mean "kinda ok" or " really very good"

I don't want to down Chinese goods but there are too many quality older tubes out there for you to have to settle for a "knock off". I found plenty of them when I really started to look.

I have an 833A I'm probably not going to use that I'm wanting to sell if you want to take that route.

Either that or check ebay and whatnot...

It is funny you mention those...

I just dropped mine on the floor 2 times(once it fell and hit a hard plastic box then hit cement), and i got the heat bright red. It still works. That is a tough little thing...

They really have seemed to work well... I have had 3 in all, one broke because it rolled onto a cold steel ATX PSU lid about 2 and a half years ago, one is the one i am talking about, and one went to a friend. All that shipping and it still lights up smile

And yea, one was 14 bucks shipped, and the other two where 24 bucks shipped. Mmmm! And i have run them at 10MHz with no air cooling! Link2
