Okay, so i'll go with a DC spark gap coil then.
DC spark-gap coil?........ why DC???????
Do you realize that a DC resonant coil require
- an HV rectifier bridge - an HV DC smoothing capacitor (that can remains charged with a LETAL ENERGY even after long time from the switch off) - something to protect both rectifier and capacitor from HV spikes - one or more high speed high voltage diode - one or more heavy, expensive and difficoult to obtain HV inductor - an asyncronous rotary spark-gap with a speed controller - all other parts of a simple coil - and of course much more skills than a simple static gap coil with self limiting transformer.
I didn't think a SSTC was that more expensive, expensiver? [i] YES, SSTCs are one of the most expensive kind of coils and even when you finish to build them, you must regulary provide a lot of money to replace the components that fail.......... spark-gaps and vacuum tube coils are much more robust and if they are well designed and realized can easily work almost forever.
At any rate, i wont be starting this project for a little while anyway. I've always wanted a coil, but when i had a decision to make, i (stupidly) chose the x-ray.
i never understand why you have decided to quit your xray project, anyhow, i suggest you to start to study the theory of theslacoils and start to design some coils; you can start to buy components and build the system only when you will have a complete idea of what you want

Well, i'm trying to fabricate an idea of what i want. I'm not starting anything yet.
Also, I quit the project because it just got boring. What would happen; i'd finish it and it would just sit in the garage to never be used again. The same thing happened with my r/c combat robot. I built it, it was fun for a little while, but now it just sits in my garage, i have no use for it and i really can't stand to look at it. Nobody fights robots anymore. I've thought about selling the parts, but i decide against it because i want to build an all terrain robot platform sometime later. (and possibly attach a paintball turret) Back to the x-ray, i felt the same thing would happen, so i quit before it was "too late". So far i've got half my money back, and i still need to sell the rest of the stuff...
