I am designing a medium size DRSSTC and am considering using 60N60 mini brick IGBTs for the full bridge and am wondering how much beyond the maximum rated current they can be pushed without being destroyed. The datasheet" target="_blank">Link2 says the max pulsed current is 300A for 1mS but I assume I can go over that for shorter periods of time? The max current will be around 500A for 200uS at a time. Here is a preliminary ScanTesla output file:

ScanTesla V-7.63 June 14, 2006 Terry Fritz
Goal = 5.907322e+001 Maximum Leader Length
Model Number = 14004
Goal Number = 86
Cprimary = 2.555000e-007
Lprimary = 2.152000e-005
Rprimary = 0.600000e-001
Coupling = 0.245000
Csecondary = 3.660000e-011
Lsecondary = 1.347400e-001
Rsecondary = 1.930000e+002
Cload = 8.845536e-012
Rload = 2.200000e+005
BPS = 2000.000000
Dwell (T1) Time = 2.000000e-004
Ilprimay Maximum = -484.012112
ICprimary RMS (Arms) = 140.353305 ILsecondary RMS (Arms) = 1.494841
VCprimary Maximum = -4294.563904
VCsecondary Maximum = -387266.575049
Coil Power = 5028.114013 Primary Bang Energy = 2.514057
Load Power = 1246.496362 Load Bang Energy = 0.623248
Leader Length (in) = 59.073215 Strike 40.000000
Primary F0 = 67874.015911 Secondary F0 = 71668.995487
Load Energy Rise Time (uSec) = 172.967517

These exact figures will probably change slightly but I will almost certainly attempt to keep peak current at around 500A. The coil will also run in audio modulation mode sometimes. Thanks!

Hi UbuntuNinja,
first of all, I see something strange in your ScanTesla data: the BPS value is really high... Usually it is between 50 and 200... Why have you set such value?

However, I'm pretty sure that this IGBT can withstand more than 500Apk in a tipical DRSSTC use...

I'm building a medium sized DRSSTC based on the same devices and I would really like to know the maximum current for such IGBT...;-)

Regards,

Luca

I have built a couple of coils with those IGBTs and they will take 500A but be careful not to push them past 100uS when running that much current.
Or else you will have some blown up IGBTs on your hands angry

Ok thanks. Apparently the link i tried to embed in my post did not work so here is it again: http://ixdev.ixys.com/DataSheet/DS99177A%28IXGN60N60C2-D1%29.pdf or in case that does not work here is the plain text: Link2 I set the BPS value high intentionally because as stated in the original post, the coil will have an audio modulation mode. By the way, where are you planning to buy the IGBTs from? I am looking for a way to get the 60N60s cheaply. Eastern has them for $25 a piece but that's $100 for a full bridge which is beyond my budget. I am wondering if there is somewhere where they would be cheaper because you are buying 4 at one time. Mouser and other electronics distributes only give you a small discount for buying 10+ and I don't think I am going to be blowing these things up so much that I need 10 of them :).

I bought them on digikey for something like 15$ each. I bought 10 pieces.

Think again you will blow them up tongue no matter how hard you try you will blow them up one way or another!

When I built my first DRSSTC I got a rail of 10, almost all of them gone!

Oh and BTW Digikey if about as cheap as you will get on 60N60s

You can't push them past 100uS?! Darn it I was planning on running the coil up to 200uS. Do you know of any similar IGBTs that could do up to 200uS at 500 amps?

you don't need to run your coils at such high PWs I never run my coils much higher than 100uS

If you go much higher than 100uS your efficacy just starts to drop.

In my opinion what is needed for large sparks is high bus voltage and good tuning. smile

ON time is related to surge impedance of primary LC circuit. The lower the impedance the shorter the ON time and vice-versa...

Anyway, ON time between 100 and 200us is quite common.

It sounds strange that the IXYS 60N60 are so (ralatively) weak, since in the easternvoltageresearch site these devices are sold as alternative of the well known HGT1N40N60A4D which have been proven to be quite reliable up to 1000 Apk under the right conditions... Also, looking at the datasheet the two devices look quite similar.

Are you shure that you were in the right conditions, and are you shure about your peak current measurements?

Regards,

Luca

Ya i'm shure, 60N60s don't come close to 40N60s performance sad
