I am working on steve wards sstc-5 Link2 (schematic below)
I am having trouble with the IRFP260's overheating. I tried the "EBAY" IRFP460's that I had around and they died also. Actually they died much quicker than the 260's. I assume that they were knockoffs. And I am sure that the coil needs some fine tuning.
Anyway,
Here are my questions.
1) If I use IRFP460's vs the 260's, do I have to do anything differently with the circuit?
2) If someone could take a moment and help me choose a mosfet, that would be great. Mouser.com has several of each available and I do not know if there is a large enough difference between the $2 ones and the $10 ones to be worth the extra cost.

Here is the IRFP260's on mouser. Link2

Hmmm.. are you using a variac? because my first SSTC I used a variac with IRFP260s with no problems.

BTW cheap IRFP260s: Link2

Unless the interrupter implements some kind of power limiting (PW control) you will need to use a variac.

I have it wired directly to mains as in the origional circuit. It is not drawing more then 5A because the 5A fuse didnt blow until after the mosfed did...

I would really suggest finding a cheap variac it's really hard to test theses circuits without one. I have found variacs on ebay as cheap as $20

Some thing like this would work just: fine Link2

Trust me if you are going to get into tesla coils you really need to buy a variac wink

Yea, I have been on the market for one for a while. I have a few variable transfromers but the largest one is 120v 2A. What do you think of these? Link2

My bigest holdback is that I do not know which brands are good. I am sure that these are a cheap brand but atleast I know that there is a warrenty on them.

Hay ya those are the cheap china ones, and they will work as I own a couple of cheap china variacs. Just keep in mind that they will only handle like 2/3 the current rating reliably, as I found out with my cheap 20A china variac mistrust

On the other hand my 10A Powerstat variac kicks butt, it will easily handle 1.5x it's rating for short amounts of time! (BTW I found that one on ebay for like $30)

If you have a 2A variac I would try that out as it will handle higher currents for short amounts of time, and also the current draw will be a lot lower at lower bus voltages.

I would definitely try it then if it's a Powerstat, they make really good variacs.
