IIRC the problem of breaking the maths behind PGP is one of a group of mathematical problems that are mathematically proven to be difficult (NP complete).
You can use lots of computing power to break them, but that's the only approach.
The fact is that I can add a handfull more bits to my key a whole lot easier than they can upgrade their computers to deal with it.
If I want to get really snotty about it I can use "one time pad". That's genuinely uncrackable.

None of this clever stuff matters if they can put me in jail (or worse) for not giving them the password.

Unlike the Enigma day codes, the sending of the message is probably monitored from both ends while it is being generated.

Best try thought tranference while looking at each other on Skype.
(but keep a poker face)

...hence my reference to "plausible deniability"... it's key (sorry!) to all this...

Cheers

OTP is still genuinely uncrackable.
Here's some data for you to try to crack
DUCK
How would you go about it?

Easy. Rubber-hose cryptanalysis. Usual cost between USD 10K & 20K. Can be quite messy though...

Unfortunately the code was found in the notebook of a notorious drug Barron after he was killed in a shoot out with the police.
It seems he was the only one who knew the code.
Now how do you crack it?

There is no proof that an efficient algorithm does not exist but it is a common belief that it does not exist or if it exists it would be too complicated to implement.

Well, one of the things about OTPs is that there tend to be at least two of them... (the recipient has one as well). Its highly unlikely that anyone would use a OTP scheme for personal encryption as either they would have to keep the pad thus destroying its usefulness, or have an astonishingly good memory. Finding the intended recipient might be tricky, but the same solution applies. Not perfect, admittedly, but its what the Allies did in WWII (recovering code books).

Cheers
