The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It is a depressing tale set in a post-apocalyptic America about a man and his son trying to survive. The movie adaptation is good too.
I've also recently read Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. It is indirectly about the morality of science but is mostly about childhood friends and growing up.
If we're going as far back as 18 months, then I will also toss in The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. A story about a dystopian future that highlights issues of feminism and personal freedom. It's a pretty talked-about book, but I just read it for the first time several months ago. I really liked it.
If you sense a theme, it's that I love post-apocalyptic and/or dystopian stuff. :D
