Now what I would like to see is Obama actually doing something for a change. Seize and close down all three of Transocean's "defective" rigs with the faulty blowout preventers, to stop another disaster before it happens.

I can't believe in this day and age that BP think they can get away with not helping with the cleanup in Lousiana then somehow manage to find $53M for an advertising campaign.

BP are absolute scum of the worst kind, and the sooner they are literally wiped off the map (as in, closed down and their assets sold to pay for the cleanup) and everyone responsible sent to prison for a very long time, the better.

Anyone still holding BP or Transocean shares has blood on their hands IMHO.

Hearing a lot on cable news here that over in Britain they're upset at all the "Brit-Bashing" going on here in the U.S.

I don't know where the UK news is getting their information but BBC's Mark Mardell put up an article this morning on this subject that is spot-on.

Speaking for Bend, Oregon, nobody's bashing Britain or the British, everybody's bashing an Oil Company named British Petroleum and it's CEO, Tony Hayward. E'nuf said.

Sorry all you BP investors (U.S. and U.K.) that BP's stock has fallen so far, but they done wrong, a whole lotta ocean is dying because of it, and BP's gotta pay for their crime.

There is no oil company called "British Petroleum".

There was, but in 1998 it merged with Amoco to form BP AMOCO; and since 2001, renamed as BP plc.
Now that was a merger, not a takeover.
AMOCO was an AMerican Oil COmpany (the hint is in the name there).

It's certainly not a very British company.
Part of the reason why they quietly dropped the AMOCO brand was this

which may, or may not have been a bigger spill. It's hard to say since estimates of the Deepwater Horizon spill vary a lot (and, of course, it's not over yet).
Here's the BBC news story about the merger.

Now, if it's not blatant anti-British prejudice that has everyone calling it by an outdated name what is it?

BTW, this
Link2
is a big oil spill, and it's all-American too.

Incidentally, if it had been Shell who had a big spill would Americans be boycotting Edam cheese?

Hmmm...

I type in "British Petroleum" on Google, and I'm taken right to BP's official website. Type in "Oil Companies" on Google, and the first one listed is... BP! I guess that means you're wrong Bored Chemist.

Son, read what I wrote. Take a deep breath. Stop with the nation-bashing.

It's unfortunate that so many have lost wealth because of BP's criminal incompetence, it happens. But BP needs to be held accountable. If this hammers investors and pensioners and the British government, well, pretty much the same thing happened here when Enron caved. Don't invest in greed-driven companies with terrible safety records.

If you typed British Petroleum and were taken to the website of British petroleum then I'd be wrong.

There is no company called British Petroleum. You were wrong to refer to it by that name.

As you say, everyone is bashing a company that no longer exists.
Why?
Could it be so they can blame Britain?
Why else would they do so?
I note you didn't answer that question.

I'm not the one "nation bashing " here, I'm just pointing out that others are doing so with little justification.

My granddad worked for them back when they were the "Anglo-Iranian Oil Company". He had to get out of there in a hurry in 1951.

In 1953 the CIA engineered the overthrow of the democratically-elected Iranian Government. That sure worked out well.

In 1954 the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company changed their name to the British Petroleum Company. Today they are perhaps the most saftey-violation-prone oil company around.

"Beyond petroleum" is an advertising slogan not a name.
