Well, you've seen the difference a bit of current can make. There you have it: you will eventually have to settle on what you're going to feed it with.
Frankly, I have not tried a rectified flyback for a SGTC (a "push-pull" solid state TC may be a different story). I have tried some unique transformers but all that I did try, I used an AC system. There are many folks here who can tell you WHY certain transformers and system designs are more appropriate for a SGTC than myself.

However, you can make your own HV probe with a selection of 10M ohm resistors & a cheap DIMM. That might be the answer to a lot of your questions as you make changes. I was very lucky to find a old RCA HV probe in a surplus sale & have used it often.
A system that puts out 30K @ 1ma may not be as useful for your purposes as on that which has much more current. Think about all those "Stun-Guns" that supposedly put out 250KV.....Their likely current may be 2ma. Remember you have to create some sort of a spark gap. If the existing spark is pencil thin to begin with I really don't see it being appropriate for a SGTC.

Leaving theory alone for a moment, the "commonly used" current for the majority of coils range from about 20ma on up. My belief is that even if the coil design is a micro one, you would need at least 10-15ma. If the power supply is extremely small you may have less room to tune the coil & your design may need to be even more exacting.

Ok i have some questions about tesla coil!First of all i think to supply the coil from a flyback transformer with a 'one switched power transistor driver'!Also i think to use this plastic pipe:
DS0072 1 001

DS72 2

It is 4,8cm diameter..It will be ok?Which is the best diametere for a small or medium coil?Second i am not sure for how many turns and what size magnet coil to use...I have four sizes:1)0,75mm 2)0,55mm 3)0,35mm 4)0,21mm diametere...

For tank capacitor is better to use ceramic capacitors or homemade leyden jar? Also for homemade is better glass or plastic bottles?

I am almost ready to turn on my sgtc! The primary is 20 turns of 1.3mm Cu wire with 6mm distance between each turn, the secondary is a 5cm,14cm height winding with 0,2mm enameled wire, the spark gap is a simple two electrodes of around 0,3mm distance with a fan to cool it.For capacitor bank i use two homemade saltwater beer bottle capacitors! At last my power supply is a flyback driven with a zvs driver at 12v 12A which makes a purple/little white spark at around 1cm and i can draw it to almost 4-5cm!What is your opinion? It will work? What i must first check for tuning?

Hi.I have one question about theory of tesla coil. The lamps light because of radio waves or the electrical field which is produced from the coil?

Sorry for my bad english!

tesla coil produces a powerful electrical field so it can cause fluorescent lamp to glow . notice that it isn't affect on tungsten lamps .
