I am using a 9 stage voltage multiplier to power my duel 803 vttc. I know I've been doing this for a long time, but I can only work on weekends .
A plus is that I think A LOT about what I'm doing. So is 18mhz possible, not including the abilitys
of the tube(20mhz.) What do you thiink about this, is it a first in coilling? I used blazer labs' cw page and Q&A.

Update- fixed most mistakes, forgive me if i didn't correct everything- Its 11:34 here:-O

Thanks,

Paul

You're using a nine-stage VM to produce 2kV @ 350mA? You must tell us your secret!

I think it will almost certainly be a first, especially when you include the novel nine-stage voltage multiplier.

What exactly do you hope to get this VTTC to produce? It seems to me that you lack general understanding and the best practises in construction of a Tesla coil and especially a VTTC.

You can gain this knowledge through studying and reading some of the great sites written by members of this forum, richard burnetts site, steve wards and many others you can find though with a search engine.

You need to read, read and read, and when you have read and studied others works for a month or two, you will have an idea of what is possible, what will you be able to make fairly cheap etc.

But in the end, building a VTTC relies much more on experimentation than predetermined coil positions and calculations.

I made myself a test setup, which can be seen on my site, where I have a tap-able primary and feedback coil, tap-able grid leak resistor network, and I then spend 2 months experimenting with different settings recording my settings, power consumption and sparklength.

You are more than welcome to PM me when you have studied Tesla coils and VTTCs some more, specific questions that shows some insight will always get a proper answer :)

I have read these sites many times for months and I under stand that this idea is not very good. The reason I am doing this is that 1. I can’t spend any more money on a mot and 2. Have you ever tried using a cw on a vttc? You your self told me that math isn't everything and before you tell me that you should do at least some math I have done lots of math. I have done different designs, plans, lay outs, cw ways, and I've looked at every site anyone has on vttcs and tcs and then some. I've learned new ways of math, knowledge, and spent hundreds of hours reading about vacuum tubes, tcs and all types of tcs. I've even spent vacation time reading an electronics book from 1956! I have all ready tested my vttc using a mot and it worked great, thank you very much. I have asked questions to this site, other sites, and I've e mailed Steve Ward! I know that a cw's out put is varied, but I have seen the numbers. In a worst case, it will be up to 3kv and that’s with no load and a perfect build! So I think my vttc will work and another person has tried this too! Here’s his site-http://rayer.ic.cz/

Sorry if I seem a little mad, its just that I'm tired of people thinking I've spent no time researching this, I HAVE AND THIS HAS ALL READY BEAN PROVEN TO WORK, I've got pms telling me to think more, WHEN I’ve THOUGHT 1000% more then I've done! You have told me many answers and you've answered then in a productive way, but when I ask something you have not tried, you tell me that I'm crazy.

Ok I know if I've stopped their then I would look stupid. Let me tell you why I think this way with scientific evidence.

1. No one has said that a cw will not work in any site or you, they just said that it would not be practical- none of the things we build on 4hv is practical- who thinks the world needs a drsstc or home made thermite?
2. You are saying that a cw's voltage would change every time you draw a spark, is that that bad? If you stay to a safe voltage there is no harm done. Would it look so bad that the spark length would change?
3. The cw is cheaper and easer to build and modify, I don't care too much that I break $7 of stuff
4. The high frequency of the pulsing dc would not give the loud buzz of a 60 Hz of a big heavy MOT.
5. In theory it would work fine but this is what you are saying- the high current output of the cw is highly inefficient and would be "not good" Most 4hv projects aren’t the height of power consumption
6. it’s a novelty, just like what Mary is saying- I don't hope for it to catch on

So now is the time for the rebuttal, tell me why a cw will not work and you just might convince me to follow your school of thought

Have a nice day,

Paul:-D

I think Mads was trying to say that since you are asking for an 18MHz power supply, that you may not understand the principals of a VTTC.

You don't need an 18MHz supply. You simply need a good DC power supply period. Its the tube that switches at 18Mhz, not the power supply.

No I'm saying that the cw is 18 mhz because of it's plan. I used small caps, the 18 was a byproduct, I was just wondering if a 18mhz ps is possible with a vttc

Have a nice day,

Im sorry that I took you for not having studied enough, but when terms gets mixed as EVR pointed out, its not always to see :)

An 18MHz C-W multiplier sounds a little crazy, a more usual operating frequency would be 30 to 100kHz.

Even ultrafast diodes will struggle to work properly at 18MHz, and you'll have a hard job making an 18MHz oscillator to power it, unless you use another vacuum tube.

Having said all this, there's no reason why a VTTC couldn't be powered off a high frequency C-W multiplier, I just think your choice of frequency is a bit crazy.

And part of the reason why people build VTTCs is that they can't cope with the complexity of a SSTC. If you want to run a C-W at any other frequency than 50/60Hz, you need to build a driver that is at least as complicated and expensive as a SSTC. You will wish that you'd just canned the whole C-W thing and picked up a MOT out of the trash.

I do not agree! :)

1. Glowing tubes are beautiful!
2. The soft humming sound of VTTC sparks are superior to be wearing hearing protection when operating a SSTC
3. Its easier to "tune", debug and get a simple SSTC to run than optimize a VTTC
4. Plates glowing red and you can turn down the voltage is a better warning than silicon scrapnels flying through the air
5. Tubes are the new black :D
