I advice on the Canon Ixus series and Canon EOS series, never let me down, even a used EOS 350D DSLR is a real good investment.
EDIT: Compacts that can use CHDK is huge advantage to take some good photoes, f.ex. the script that checks for changes in the picture and takes a icture when it registers changes.
I took this picture of some steelwool exploding with a Canon Ixus 70 using CHDK

I agree with IntraWinding, if only it had chdk like the other cameras :( I would try to stay as far away from cameras that have no manual settings and are prided in "easy to use", those seem to be the worst for me, or I just like to control my picture settings alot. :P
I cannot find any of my good pictures, but here are a few I found on my photobucket.
For your interest in taking pictures of arcs, this may be most interesting for you.
All of those were taken with the DMC-TZ3, and the only editing of them was cropping/resizing/stitching.

I'm out of touch with all of the latest models but some features that I think are important; 1) If you travel get a camera that can use common (e.g. "AA") bateries 2) Time to get out camera and shoot a good shot. (Camera phones win here) 3) 'ruggedness' - can mix with all my other techno-stuff without special care/packaging. 4) Technical features - too many compromise/trade-off decisions vs budget! Just to add to your confusion, maybe a camera phone for 'snapshot' photography and a 'hacked' web cam for 'technical' photography? (telescope, microscope, macro- ......) A good 'investment' is a good camera as a gift to your nearest/dearest, which you can 'borrow'.

I have the Canon Powershot 590IS .. great, cheap little camera. It does support CHDK, but isn't great for remote triggering since it has quite a delay before firing, but apart from that, for the price, I like it. Manual focus, 15s exposures, 8.1MP, fairly good macro shots:
Only downside for me is no remote control, but I know there are other powershots out there that do have remote mode.

Arcstarter: Once you find something you like you may want to look at Radio Shack & Circuit City. They have old models that they really have to flush. I saw a Cannon Powershot from last year 12mp - $169 new warranted all together, etc. @ Rat Shack At Circuit City I saw a Cannon EOS Body for $499... But I am a film guy and buying a EOS body is not the issue - a good macro lens for that bad boy is not light and cheap. The point & shoot cameras are really nice today. If you can find one that gets in close enough for you, they are a sweet deal IF you get last year's news. Another issue (for me anyway) is ruggedness. If the camera is easily messed up (remember with digital you are really dealing with more electronics than glass) you have an issue. There is even a tool company that makes a armored camera for less than 200 that is waterproof, drop proof, etc... It's for contractors and is damn tough. You really have to think about what you're gonna' use her for. (IMO) If it's just lightweight fun stuff; stay with a point & shoot.
