For years, "home brew" projects have gone in fit's and spurts, but since the internet, there has been an explosion of ideas and collaboration. And from what I can see is that in the last 5-10 years, Tesla coils have encountered something of a resurgence and an explosion of technology has been seen, from SGTC's, to SSTC's, and then back to DRSSTC's (Which I see as similiar to SGTC's in operation).
My questions are thus, Where is the next step in Tesla Coil work, or is DRSSTC's the pinnacle? What are your guys next plans and ideas? Have we "out evolutioned" the coil via the net?

Right now, they're getting more efficient by the minute. Maybe we'll be operating them via free *nergy soon. tongue

I still have an intermediate term project that I hope to significantly increase the Watts ratio (of spark length to secondary length) above my currrent limit of 3.0. And its not a DRSSTC. I still have several other projects more pressing before this but I almost haven't been in the shed for a month.
I also have a really cool Tesla idea that might suit my first DRSSTC. (Still in the 'for my eyes only' category) That might happen sooner. Not done before as far as I know.
Plus I should really set up my 18 inch SGTC to work properly. Only needs a decent primary but the termites ate my temporary one.
Add to that the 16kj transient driver to provide massive power in a fixed pulse train for a single streamer to grow and max out for really dramatic photos.
And I am planning a more dramatic multi HV photo as my signature shot, better than my current one which is back at number one under 'Tesla coil' in Google images.

So there is still some life in TC's

I just need to be unfit and out of a job.....

I think someone should take a look at the tesla resonator itself.
It is the thing that seems to be inefficient and one of big problems here, it's Q is what pumps voltages to great values.

So much TC's are built and resonator didn't change much (legendary close-wound secondary with topload).

Could someone try putting topload somewhat higher above the ground, wind secondary loosely (maybe use entire thing as magnifier)?

I don't actually know much how could we help there.

If we just somewhat improve Q of our resonators we could pump big, CW sparks from SSTC's (this would be interesting, 10 foot CW arc), for same input power...

I'm sure all of you are loyal nuts 'n volts readers, so flip to page 8. The new graphite substrates are the future. Graphene based mosfets and igbt's with incredible efficiencys, leading to perhaps all surface mount componenets. An entire driver and bridge on a single pcb? Back to reality..

Firkragg: The unloaded Q of a Tesla resonator is about 500. I've found that the spark lowers the Q to about 10. So the resonator really is quite efficient. You don't get long arcs with low power CW drive because of the dynamics of the plasma itself: CW drive just heats the discharge instead of lengthening it.

With solid-state coils, I estimate we can get about 75% of the wallplug power into the spark.

As for plans for the future: I plan to quit Tesla coiling and reinvent myself as a rock star wink
