So get this...I sell an item to some punk student in CA. He gets the item, then claims not as described. I ask him to elaborate and he refuses to tell me what hes trying to do. Just that it wont work. He opens a case. HE WINS 5 mins later?!
So you know, it was a collimating lens assembly for a high power diode laser. It WAS fine when I mailed it to him, and had been run at over 30W. He claims he was using a 5mW laser and it "wouldnt work". He wasnt willing to talk about WHAT woudnt work, just wanted to talk about a refund despite the return policy. PUNK ASS college kids with no respect. (Yeah, I am a college student, but not a kid).

He offers NO evidence that the item is not as described. Ebay just AUTO sides with him? My auction clearly stated no returns....

Sellers here BEWARE! Especially if you see 8-black bidding. All a buyer has to do is claim, not as described and YOU WILL take a refund.

This is BS...
Sorry, had to rant. Figured the other ebay sellers here would like to be warned about ebays new buyer protection.

This is exactly why I don't bother selling on eBay anymore. I feel bad for those who have no choice but to keep on selling there.

All the protection, all of the power, lies with the buyer. Count yourself very lucky if you get the lens back at all. One of the more popular scams I've read about is for the buyer to claim "not as described," initiate the refund process, and then ship back an empty box, or a box appropriately weighted with junk. So long as the return is tracked, that's all PayPal/eBay needs in order to reverse the transaction.

OTOH, the other scam is for the buyer to send back the item with the part they needed removed or replaced with a defective replacement.
Especially common with expensive electronics such as 'phones and very hard to detect.

This happens a lot with laptops, seems that laptop with known bad MB, optical drives and/or screen installed gets sold as "faulty, won't turn on", then the original working mainboard gets sold under another Ebay name.
Most people never realise they have been conned and assume they got a "good" deal until they try to fix it and discover all the parts are also bad.
this is also common with password locked MBs, as they will appear to work fine until the screen comes on.

then there's the whole "label 256MB pendrive as 16GB and hack the software" scam, this is nasty.
Even heard of counterfeit RAM before..

the latest scam is selling defective removed PS3 laser sleds as new, this one got me a while back. Took me a while to figure out why the module wouldn't work, but it turned out to be a bad spindle motor.

To make matters worse, the ebay rep told me that they can override the sellers terms at will. They said their official stance is that "Customer is always right", unless you (the seller) are the customer.

You should have seen the things that the ebay rep told me. Its really sick how things are stacked against the seller. It truely is a matter of time before one gets screwed.

FWIW, I've sold about $2k worth of stuff on Ebay and never been screwed - yet! I had a few NPBs on lower value items, but I just ignored them for the sake of a quiet life.

Sure, Ebay/Paypal take a sizeable cut of your profit, and sure they side with the buyer. But the flipside of that is a great advertising system that puts your item in front of millions of eyeballs, and an environment that makes buyers feel safe, so they buy more stuff.

I agree. I've been selling on Ebay since is started and never had a problem as a seller (knock on wood), although i am not a high volume seller. Sure, the usual NPBs, but as Steve said, money never changed hands so its not a big issue.

Although, i do agree their policies have gone into the toilet as of the past few years.

If you sell something that is paid via paypal, make sure you get delivery confirmation for orders under $250.00 and for anything over $250.00 get signature confirmation. As far as receiving goods "not as described", not sure how you could protect yourself against that.

Idea: I've not had any problems but for a high value item perhaps you could insist on payment by a means other than PayPal. EBay may not allow this but are unlikely to react unless a buyer complains. If they complain, cancel the sale.
