So for anyone trying to log interesting calls, in about 2 weeks, me and another friend will be roadtripping down from Toronto, Ontario to Virginia Beach, Virginia, chatting on local 2m repeaters as we go.
When I have more travel details I'll let you guys know, but if you're looking for the odd chat with a pair of VA3's, and you are around the east coast between Toronto and Virginia Beach, we will likely be roadtripping on the 17th and 18th (and 22nd/23rd on the way back up).

I finally got my first HF rig at Ham-Com today! - a Kenwood TS-140S, operates all HF and is capable of most modes @ 100 Watts... I plane to setup my first HF antenna next week, and I might even try listening with a non-transmitting grade antenna I have...
now I just need to offload the FT-950 MicroHam MicroKeyer radio cable for a Kenwood cable (when I got the keyer, that was the cable the seller had

So first update on my trip, myself (VA3MOO) and my co-driver (VA3FRY) will be probably on a repeater that Dave said to speak on once we're a little south of the Canada/US border: 145.130- PL 186.2. We'll be monitoring as we head down so if you want, wait to hear our calls!

Har har.
So while I wasn't able to pick up the repeater that Dave gave me, I was chatting a good portion of the way down on other repeaters that I found, so at least I made the most of it. I'll give it a try on the way back, but there was a ton of rain probably affecting it.

From what I understand, 6m is the band where you pretty much have to sacrifice a goat in a pentagram with candles. That, or get really lucky with sporradic E. Rightnow we have 0 sunspots, so I don't think you'll get any long distance via 6m.
You could try IRLP though and make contacts that way too.

What is a generally accepted grounding wire size?
I'm putting a vertical on a short roof-mount tower, and for lightning protection I'm grounding the tower to an 8' copper post in the ground. It's about forty feet from tower to grounding post. What size wire should I use to connect the two? The guys at the local hardware store pointed at this little 12-awg bare copper wire but that looked like maybe a hundred-amp fuse to me.
