WA7KVC near Seattle in Washington state

Got my general class license when I was 15, but that was ummm a little over 35 years ago. I used to be very active in CW on the lower bands, but my trusty Heath HW-101 has been in a box for a few years. Maybe after the kids finish college I'll convert a bedroom into a shack; that would be fun.

73, Barry

KG4VIC, technician class, since I was 11 or 12 years old (17 now), I'm near Atlanta, GA. Haven't been on the air since I started highschool...radio broke and I can't afford a new one.

Extra class dosen't require code anymore? I probably should go for it then...

I was in Warner Robins for a football game at the beginning of the school year! Maybe I ran into you...

I can recommend the Jingtong JT-208 VHF - 2.5 W 2m FM cheap chinese handheld,
I also have a Puxing PX-777 5W 2M FM handheld which is even better but a little more expensive.
Both have a UHF version also.
Both are very cheap on eBay and I got both mine in 5 days from China!

Sulaiman, thanks for the tip. I picked one up on ebay just now for $35. Not bad at all. I'll have to post more information once it arrives. Did you happen to attempt the microphone modification, or were you satisfied with the quality of the transmitted audio?

With the JT-208 I had good reports of the audio so I did not do the modification (hole-drilling)

For even better audio I used one of the cheap "hand's-free' PTT-mic. with ear piece" accessories - very convenient.

KD7NZL here, licensed in 2001, I am still a technician. I've been using a ICOM 2100h (2m) and IC-T7H (2m/440 handheld)

I've tried to get into packet radio on the cheap, but have failed a few times (and burned a resistor out in my 2100 trying to homebrew a parallel interface!)
any advice in this area would be appreciated!

I don't really see any reason to get a higher class license at the moment unless I get around to learning code...

I'm sure we could help, though a thread in the general science/electronics thread with more information on how you're planning on interfacing it would be a better place.

Also, you can upgrade any time you like without worrying about the code requirements... there are no longer *any* code requirements at any level in the US, just the written exam.

K1ZAT here, general class, licensed since 2007. I'm more of a listener than a talker, though.
