I wouldn't wast any money on those TO-247s I would go strait to the MiniBlocks, TO-247s just don't have the balls to run in a DR. tongue
I guess it depends on what your looking to get out of the TO247 style. This is a TO247 style full H-bridge, with 120Vac input I am using a doubler circuit but it produces decent spark length around 34 inches. I am building a "Block" style H-Bridge for it just for comparison, the input voltage and caps will remain the same.
Edit: Hmm for some reason the image does not upload..

Super mega quad post!

Nice looking coil. What IGBT's did you use in your bridge?

Hahaha I am not sure how I got that many posts but I did...anyway I used FGH80N60FDTU IGBT's in the H-Bridge they are TO247 style each one is on its own heat sink.

what is your f res and coil dimensions? i have those same IGBTs on hand for if my current FG40N60SFD's blow up.

Dr. brownout,

care to share a design layout of your power elecltronics (fullbridge?)

IM using IRG4PF50WD (TO-247) for my 3.2x 9" DRcoil...

I've heard of several people having good success with the HGTG20N60A4Ds, and I know people have pushed them up to 500A peak. They are also some of the fastest cheap IGBTs I know of, and excellent value for money.

Yes I can what format would you like? The H-Bridge can and should designed on one board, however due to the size boards I had on hand I used 2 boards to do the layout. It is a single sided board design and each heat sink is seperate. This is really a prototype design I can post pictures of the Hbridge design as well if that helps. I can also give you the layout files if that helps any I did them in Orcad Layout.

Yes those IGBT,s I think were only around $4 or so so I gave them a try, the Fo on this coil is around 65Khz and they IGBT's seem to handle it fine. There is a lot of room in this coil for more power but I wanted this one to be on the lower end of the scale. I do have some CM300's that I am going to be using as well, and I am increasing the power to 240Vac with a doubler, so the experimenting continues. This particular design is not Fiber Optic, but could easily be changed to fiber optic. I will post some pics of the fiber optic assembly when I get it done.

But for a 120Vac coil it does a pretty decent job. Here is a picture of the coil secondary is 9" with a 48 inch winding length, my top load is 6" x 24" spun aluminum.

Here is a picture of the ouptut at the H-Bridge treminals, there is some slight ringing but the ringing amplitude is small and causes no problems to the IGBT's I ran this for about 45 minutes straight and everything was fine no rediculous temps on any of the components I monitored the temps with thermal imaging and nothing got of out of hand so it runs pretty good.

I decided to use the thermal camera rather thermal couples because of the high EMF generated and did not want to damage my thermal monitoring equipment I am not sure it would but I did not want to take the chance.

Also here is a pic of the Hbridge using the TO247 stlye IGBT's. Again could easily be on 1 board but the boards I had were smaller ones so I used 2 of them. 2 different GDT as well like I said experimenting...hahaha same turns on each same cores, just different wire sizes and winding techniques on each one.

The Hbridge is just a normal Hbridge nothing fancy here.
