I see a situation developing which is similar to that in the USA before the prohibition - the brewers pretending they had nothing in common with the distillers when they saw trouble on the horizon. We all know how that turned out. Hobbyists ought not to segregate ourselves from one another as we`re going to need the numbers sooner or later.

Sorry for the continuing OT and +1 for Horowitz.

Well, I'm not even technically a hobbyist any more, so you guys just go ahead and do whatever you want. wink

(I work for a limited liability company, and the designs I work on get EMC and safety tested before they're offered for sale. Wall warts are our friends, we think hard before allowing mains inside a product, as it makes the safety testing more expensive.)

Also, 4hv of course has a disclaimer. Link2

If you peer back through 140 years of the 'Age of Electricity" you will see individuals embracing technology with little more than curiosity and with no education of note shaping the futur.

A good living can be made on the fringes. The foolproof technology of today needs an endless amount of tinkering.

So spark away: Rest assured if you find out something valuable the wrold will beat a path to your door to try and take it from you.

Forrest Mims makes some very good basic electronics books that are sold in Radio Shack. They are pretty "cheesey", but i still reference them once in awhile because they are so straightforward.

Radio Shack probably still carries these.

does not the individual bear similar responsibility in the handling of any object with the potential to do harm?

Mains operated devices are different than most hazards: fault causing conditions take long periods of time to manifest. Insulation failure is very common traced back to improper application which could not slip by the myriad of safeguards in place in industry.

How could an individual know the likely outcome of using ersatz
material when the correct slot/core stuff is only available is bulk quantities?

My point exactly. I personally do not believe it's inappropriate for any personal limitations to be placed on a private web site.

....However it's a shame that particular web site is so strident about something that many folks would believe "goes with the territory". It would be similar to a chemistry web site not publishing material that uses chemicals that are carcinogenic or have a very sever LD50.
But don't get me wrong; I do like the site & I believe it has some great information.

Re: Forrest Mims book; for it's longevity (since 1998 or earlier), simplicity, & unique style, I think it is one of the better investments for a beginner or young person with little background in electronics. I think it was well thought out & could have a great appeal.
