hmm... this would suggest a MAJOR problem, as this is an expert in car design.

Perhaps, but pardon my skepticism: what exactly is happening here? Is he shorting the wiper to the top of a potentiometer or some equivalent connection within the acceleration system?

He may be an expert in car design but he doesn't look at the camera, closes his eyes every time he answers, and avoids orating anything technically useful in favour of buzzwords like "fingerprint" / "trail" only later to imply a "fault condition" when the ECU tester clearly reads "pass" afterwards.

Mostly weasel words: "if this fault exists" / "could be" / "could occur". Same goes for the quality of testimony of the presenter: "The brakes don't work!" -- thankfully he was gently corrected!

Gone are the days when men spoke in fact and absolutes. Dumbing things down to the points of uselessness is a disservice to the audience!

I bet it's public hysteria whipped up by publicity-hungry fraudsters, reporters, and lawyers.
Or more likely hysteria whipped up by american car makers such as GM to discredit Toyota and regain some of their loss profit margin.
I bet the same sort of thing happens with all car makes, it just doesn't get reported, hyped up, etc...

Not the first time this has happened. In an article titled The Wrong Kind of Toyotathon, the writer briefly covers the history behind unintended consequences of trumped-up media scare behind automotive problems. Unnecessary fear has hurt Toyota. If GM had the exact same problem today, do you think it would be in the news nearly as much? GM was bailed out and partially owned by the US government today. I find it highly improbable that all brands on the playing field are now treated on an equal, unbiased manner. Your chances of dying in a car accident, period, is many magnitudes higher than dying specifically in a Toyota from unintended acceleration. I drive two Toyotas and I'm not remotely worried about it.

If the accelerator is stuck and presumably bouncing off the rev limiter, can you downshift it (an auto) manually to induce engine braking? Under normal conditions, there are no problems downshifting this way. This might be more effective than coasting in neutral if the hydraulic system in the automatic transmission allows it. Light modulation of the hand/parking brake, while not sufficient to stop a car at highway speeds in a short distance, can aid in reduction of speed as well.

It always reminds me of this because initial findings are rarely reflected with accuracy when it becomes a 10-second soundclip on the evening news:

Good analogy.

The problem isn't poor understanding and communication, it is people who are exploiting for personal gain that there's poor understanding and communication. Happens with religion and politics every minute of every day.
