my ZVS died after a capacitor change (best guess is gate ringing) any ideas on best cap value ?

It all depends on the inductance of the primary on the core, and the frequency you want.

Just go with 5+5 turns on the primary, and around .5uf. That should get you a frequency of something like 40KHz i am sure.
