A lot.

Just one simple tip. On the right of your posts you have three small buttons, one of which is called "Edit". It is preferrable that you use the edit function instead of double posting. In fact the forum rules states that you should do so, unless your previous post is older than two days. wink

your cap looks like a filter cap. you can try charging them + and - 9kv DC with your neon utilizing a fullwave center tap. It is probibly more sutible as a VTTC power supply cap or hv dc power supply. what you need is a pulse type capacitor.

some filter caps act like a short to 60hz NST's have you tried charging it with HV DC. Try about 10 1n4007
in series with one pole and ground from your neon sign transformers

Will try that.
Do you think these types of caps are any good?

that is a mica transmitting cap and is exalent for SGTC or VTTC's. it has about a 25 Kv rating. Can you see a data tag on it?

It reads "Paper Capacitor" on the ID tag if you look carefully.

I have used Sprague Mica doorknob caps for SGTC with my 12/30, which worked fine. When I used my 12/60 it killed the transformer because Mica's short when they are pushed too hard in pulse duty. They are designed for CW, so don't use them for SGTC unless you can risk the cap and transformer.

Hi William I found thease
Link2
I have seen them used for SGTC's and DRSSTC you may need a bunch in series paralell configuration. if you live in the UK or EU Franell may also have them.

the mica cap is not a pulse rated cap and would be best in a vacuum tube TC but with a helthy derating and a safty gap and proper filter for neon sign transformer. any how this is my expierience. Any
SGTC you build should have the filter and safty gap.

if you think that you are up to the the task you have two of the main ingreadiance for a VTTC.

Teravolt, That is the exact path that i am going down. I am going to go buy that mica cap tomorrow, and i'm going to look for some tubes. You never know, i might just get lucky. Electronics surplus stores can be a treasure hunt.

Also, i found a good deal on some CDE 942C's and ordered 40. Then one of my NST's blew up. So I now have 40 new capacitors all nice in an array that i'll probably never use (as configured). In the mean time, i am going to make a VTTC, but once i finally find a pole pig, i will finalize my SGTC. I think that VTTC's are more elegant, but the long sparks of a SGTC are made to impress.

You can see my thread about my capacitor bank that i worked on ALL DAY making. Oh well, I guess it happened for a reason.
