I picked this up at my local surplus store. I figure from the looks of it that it is a pulse capacitor. Any ideas?

It looks to me more like some type of high voltage filter capacitor, out of a radar or some such type device. The dc rating would mean its not a power factor correction cap (which would be bad), but the lugs do not look like the 'insane high current' type. I would guess it is out a radar or other large vacuum tube device, and it looks like it stores about 20j in each of the capacitors (0.5ufd at 9000v).

Do you think this would be suitable for tesla coil duty? I would tie together the capacitors for 18kV @.25 uF. I just don't want this baby to explode!

Might be. Paper is not the best dielectric, but the thing looks beefy enough that it might handle it. You could run it for a short period and see if it gets warm. Is there an overpressure relief vent somewhere on the can? If not it would be a good idea to build a plywood box around it to contain shrapnel "just in case".

Be aware that it probably contains oil with PCBs, which makes it a minor hassle to dispose of, and it's best not to drink the contents.

Haha, wilco on the PCB's. No pressure relief, ill make a 1" plywood box for it. It is .125" steel, but you never know. Any ideas on what i could use this for other than tesla coils? I hope this wasn't a terrible buy! But for $40 im not out too much either way.

Aww man! i just realized that since one of the terminals on each capacitor is tied together, i cant double the voltage! This thing may be more useless than i originally thought. Any bets on wether or not this thing will withstand 15kV? I really don't know what i'm going to do with it other than use it on a tesla coil, but all my transformers are 15kV.

Unless! would one of these be useful in a DRSSTC or a SSTC? I do not know much about SSTC's or DRSSTC's but eventually, i plan on making one. God, i really wish it would work for my current coil!

Looks like the capacitors are already in series, which is what you want for a higher voltage rating. Connect to terminals 1 and 3, it'll be 0.25 uF / 18kV rated.
