That's just north of Buxton, I cycled within 6 miles of it yesterday. That one has been restored, there's another one a few miles up the road from me that has been burnt out as far as I know!

my uncle works in real estate and he knows someone who bought a house on a large piece of property next to a decommissioned military installation pertaining to nuclear matters (never knew if it was just a bunker or an empty silo, which Civilians do have access to in the USA). All of a sudden one day at night there was a VERY large military presence: helicopters, ground troops and vehicles, dogs, etc. It turns out the Training divisions were never told that the property never belonged to the government, it scared the living hell out of the new owner,
Also, in the US some well known hacking events for hardware and software have recently started using a Nuckear missile silo as their one of their meeting spots

From 1982, these Royal Observer Corps bunkers were supplied with a Plessey PDRM82-F - Portable Dose Rate Meter 1982 Fixed - a desk top version of the PDRM82, with a coaxial cable connecting the meter to a GM tube mounted above ground.
The PDRF82 instruments (without the coaxial extension) are often available on ebay, for £20 or thereabouts (say $30), but the experimenter will most likely be very disappointed, as the LCD readout is calibrated in cGy, so will continue to show zero in the absence of a local nuclear catstrophy. Moreover, the internal GM tube is of the metallic kind impervious to all but gamma radiation.

About 30 years ago I got shown around an ROC bunker on the outskirts of Much Wenlock in Shropshire.
My immediate impression was of how old and dilapidated it was. The dark metal framed bunk bed was straight out of WWII - I guess it's days where already numbered. If anyone's thinking of them as useful for protection in a nuclear attack I wouldn't bother. For a start they're placed in locations that have a good view over a wide area as their purpose was to report the location and size of explosions.
The direction of a blast was captured by a kind of 360 degree pinhole camera, which I think might have also recorded elevation. The flash would make a visible mark on the sensitive paper inside, which had to be changed by climbing back out of the bunker to the surface after each blast or group of blasts, with your fingers crossed I imagine.
The size of the blast was recorded on a mechanical dial pressure meter designed so the needle stuck at the peak reading as the pressure wave passed over. I don't think there was much room for food, but one of the volunteers was the owner of a Corner Shop (General Store) and I imagine he'd have turned up with a few bags of crisps for a start!
I wonder what people actually use them for now? Anyone out there a documentary film maker?
