Took some more pictures and a better, brighter video today. I also replaced the secondary top with a cleaner piece, it still has the magnet so I can add different attachments. I had a homemade mini toroid maybe 6" in diameter but I didn't get anything from it for some reason.

Video is 2MB in size. Arc is 4" (10cm) in length. Link here.

I appreciate the nice comments. I think this TC turned out rather well with minimal tuning.

Noob question.

I made a home made toroid topload thinking it would get me more powerful sparks but I get no air arcs, none at all with this topload mounted. I can draw arcs off of it but do not get any free air arcs. Why?

The topload toroid is 6" x 1.5" (15cm x 3cm).

Theres a few reasons.

1. It could be knocking your TC out of tune.
2. The charge is dissipating over the larger area. Are you using a breakout point?

Even without toroid,I think he doesn't utilize full power of NST. Too small primary tank.
I have also 5kv/20 mA NST powered SGTC .With very small top load and with Cp=15 nF it generates 10 " spark.

So increasing primary cap (and reducing primary winds) will net longer streamers?

In your case I guess so (unless spark gap fails to do its job).Presently I think that your coil is fed by less than 50W of wallplug power.

If you mean mains input, I measured mains current draw because I was interested in knowing how much the entire coil pulled. I read 1.20 amps at 115vac, that's 138W

No,that's 138 VA.But if it draws so much apparent power, since cap size is small, PPS rate must be very high, losses are high, quenching probably bad...And even with all this neglected the bang size, which is very important thing, is tiny.

Yes it 138VA but if we assume a power factor of "1" we still get 138W. :)

Now, I am an absolute noob when it comes to coils and only built this briefcase SGTC because I was inspired by TDU's build. I copied his exact build. Sure I would like to see 10" streamers but I am not sure it's capable of that much. Then again, I am a noob.

I am completely open to suggestions to improve the design. I am limited in space as I have to keep it in the briefcase. Portability of it is the best part. I suppose increasing the primary capacitance would be a start. I don't have lots of room for a large MMC so any suggestions will be taken seriously and results posted here.

Thanks a bunch for the help in advance!

John
