Yet another example of the guilty (Toyota) stamping on the innocent.
Or another example of the USA diverting their attention away from real problems. It would have been great if they made the same amount of noise about bank bailouts and Wall St.
Got a stake in the US auto market? Great! Here's your chance to scare sales away to American vehicles: drag Toyota through the dirt over a minor issue! Remove the floor mat.

I am no Toyoda liker but it is simple in any situation it is very possible if the accelerator gets stuck unless you have no time to react you could simply put it in neutral and shut it off press in the clutch or even slam the brakes unless you have a souped up car with tons of Horse Power the brake will at least slow you down in full throttle situations and cause serious damage to the brakes but could save your life.
Call me crazy but owning a Toyoda has more cons than pros in my eye's there is only one pro most of them have real tough engines. Con I think they are all ugly and they crumble up like soda cans but I am not going to judge you own a Yoda I will like you the same as far as stuck gas pedals I would fix it for you already did twice.

My truck has 425 horsepower. If it were to take off, the results would be ugly. Only trouble with that whole scenario is the shifter is right beside the wheel, and it takes almost no effort or time to just bump it into neutral. Problem solved, truck isn't going any where.
I must say though, some of the responses in this thread have really demonstrated how ignorant the American public can be, and just how easily deceived they really are.

Ha Ha nice! Oh and to eliminate dumb speeding people just put something in the speed limit signs that sends a signal to a receiver in the car that limits your speed to the speed limit or even 5 over so you still have the option to speed.
Example if you try to accelerate past the speed limit it will send a signal to the PCM/ECU to limit the air to the intake or some thing other.

I own a 1989 4WD ext. cab Toyota pickup and a 1994 Forunner. Taken both to places far out in the northern high desert, the Sawtooth Mountains, and the Cascades. Excellent vehicles.

I agree with the past 2 posts.
There have only been a handful of instances where this has happened, and even less deaths. This, out of the millions of people that die from drunk driving accidents, is literally nothing. I know i would change my mind if someone close died, but i am sure you know why i would feel that way.
Not that attention is not being payed to alcohol-related death, but as big of a deal that is compared to this, i don't think we really have the time to worry about this little incident.

oh and by the way, drivers cause more accidents driving slow then the drivers who drive above the speed limit. really the safe thing to do is get everybody to lean defensive driving and only let people above a certain IQ drive :)
Commonly claimed, never supported by statistics. Speed, either too fast or too slow, is almost never the sole factor in causing a crash.
Regardless, it is impossible to deny the physics behind Bjorn's statement. After all, kinetic energy is E=0.5mv^2. If everyone reduced their speed by 30%, drivers in many accidents would be subjected to 50% less impact energy. There can be little doubt that this would dramatically reduce auto-accident fatalities, even if the total number of accidents remained the same.
So why don't we mark all our 65mph zones to 45mph and save a ton of fuel and thousands of lives in the process? The real answer is that people like to drive fast and get places quickly, and we've decided that thousands of lives and thousands of barrels of oil is an acceptable cost to be able to do that.
So, when we, as a society, are willing to place thousands of lives each year upon the altar of convenience, it seems very very silly to get worked into a vehicle safety lather about, at most, a few dozen deaths over several years due to a software fault.

hmm.
Actually there is a reasonable case for adding "flicker fusion" test units to all new cars. the idea here is that drug/alcohol use and tiredness causes the flicker fusion frequency to decrease, and that is nearly 100% accurate. in addition it takes a fraction of the time of a conventional alcohol test.
maybe there could be an "erratic driving" override that reduces engine output to survivable levels in the event it detects sudden acceleration or rapid steering that you might expect from a stolen vehicle... -A
