Once I had a radio, circa 1920's, with a top lid that opened to see the tubes. I noticed a lot of white spots in the wood, took it home where it was warm. A few days later, the spots began to hatch and the wood was alive with tiny bugs.

Laser printers often have useful parts such as stepper motors and high voltage parts..
as for inkjets, the useful parts include:- ribbon cables, expensive metal bearings and rods (handy for small repraps), and the all important optical interrupt sensors and ribbon (these can sense a movement of less than 0.2mm repeatably)

The optical position sensor ribbons can serve as coarse gratings, used with a laser pointer to demonstrate diffraction of light. The pitch of lines on the ribbon is usually a round number like 150 per inch; from that and the diffraction angle you can find the wavelength of your laser, or vice-versa. -Rich
