Keep in mind, that while most readers, the Kindle, the Sony, and the Nook included, all have 3g connectivity specifically to their proprietary book stores, this does not mean that you can't import your own books from other sources.
As long as you find books that don't have built-in DRM (A majority of books outside amazon don't, from what I've found) you can convert them to EPUB, which works on almost every reader except the kindle. On the kindle, you can convert them to PDF, but the Kindle also sucks at handling those (Can you tell I hate the kindle?)
I have several hundred electronics/physics/math/chemistry textbooks already on mine, along with several hundred issues of various magazines encompassing the same topic. They're all PDF or EPUB, and can just be uploaded directly to my reader.
This is one of the reasons I find expandable memory so absolutely essential. I've already filled a 16GB card, and I've got another 16GB on order (my Sony has two slots!).
In short. There are gobs and gobs available. Actual textbooks from legitimate sources in Ebook format are somewhat sparse, but they're out there. If you aren't averse to using bittorrent, there are hundreds on my two favorite torrent trackers. I'm also in the process of building a simple book scanner using a digital camera that will let me scan any books I can't download directly and save them as a PDF without *too* much hassle.
I just finished reading my first book on the Sony. It's in PDF format, which is the least elegant of all the ebook formats (would you expect anything else from a PDF?). I can't speak to the nook's PDF handling, because I didn't get to play with that feature, but my Sony handles them pretty well. I had no complaints or troubles reading them. I do *highly* recommend that you slap one on a memory stick and go in there and try it on the demo model before you buy. Most of your books will be PDFs, and if it sucks at displaying them, it will seriously degrade your enjoyment. I did exactly that with the Sony at BestBuy.
