There are cables you can buy to bury in your driveway, or even put under the shingles of your roof! Wire em up to a breaker
in the ol basement and youre all set! As far as the microwave thing, .. I guess the best way to remove snow with a microwave
would be to rip off the metal case strap it to a big stick and call it a shovel! Driveway heaters are not as expensive as one would
think. They make them pretty energy efficient these days to!

You could bonk yourself in the head with the MOT, go into a coma for six months, and then wake up in the hospital with no snow to be found.

The simplest is to sell your house and live on the street, people do it for you then :)

Haven't driveway heaters always been 100% efficient, 1 joule of heat out for each joule of electricity in?

In fact, I've just had this really great idea. Instead of putting clothes on when it becomes chilly outside, why not make a big hat with radiant heaters pointing down, I'm sure it would be worth the energy, and it would also be 100% efficient.

Everything is 100% efficient on an infinite time span. All energy will eventually become heath. The heather puts out various wave length's of light and IR. Since it also puts out visible light which doesn't directly contribute to the heating I'd say it's just a bit less then 100% efficient.

What's wrong with just throwing some salt over the snow?
I wish they used more of it in my area. It's like a skating rink out there at the moment!

I hate that. They salt the roads here in Norway, and our cars begin to rust already after their first winter. Tons after tons of salt, just because people cannot afford the discomfort of studded tires.

Why hasnt anyone in this thread suggested a simple snow blower? confused

I always get a chuckle out of seeing the energy star rated electric space heaters at the store. What, old space heaters couldn't convert the entire 1500W to heat?

In all seriousness, though, huge bonus points for anyone who can figure out how long it would take a 600W output magnetron to melt one cubic meter of average density snow.

One site I found said freshly fallen snow density is 160 kg/cu.m.

So Q = mL. Latent heat of fusion for water (L) is 334 kJ/kg. So Q (in kJ) is 53440. Now:

1W = 1J/s so s = J / W , s = 53440 / 600 = 89 seconds. Which seems awfully fast.

For compacted snow --> density is 481 kg/ cu.meter
