The pulse-train with PWM applied has a distinct "detuned" or chorus like sound to it. This is because a pulse train with PWM is equivalent to the difference of two detuneds sawtooth waveforms.
If you generate two sawtooth waveforms at slightly different frequencies called s1 and s2, then subtract one from the other to get s1-s2, the resulting signal looks like a PWM pulse train. That's why your PWM modulator has a thick trancey "detuned" sound to it.
Early analogue music synthesisers used to use this PWM trick to get a richer sound out of a single low cost oscillator, without having to resort to using two seperate oscillators.
