I understand the attitude that all things should be freely available to everyone, but I think that over simplifies the problem. I mean, clearly we don't want nerve gas available on every street corner for example.
Such compounds are already widely used for legitimate purposes, and are restricted for export to hostile political regions. However, the alteration of these compounds is not generally known by users, and purposely avoided by the educated.
In my opinion, there is nothing more dangerous than a mass of uneducated scared people.
IIRC Feynman once tried to treat body lice with carbon tet., and described the sensation as rather memorable.

Hmm interesting thread. I too have had very little problem getting hold of materials over here in the UK.
However, on one occasion i did get a visit from two plain clothes officers in an unmarked car. Seems i had bought some chemicals from a dodgy supplier online. They checked i knew what i was doing, and how i was storing the chemicals then thanked me and went on their way. I get the occasional click on the phone line now and then, but maybe that's just me being paranoid.

I've heard of cases before where sites selling explosive and drug precursors have turned out to be honeypots set up by law enforcement. Maybe you stumbled across one of these.

The only component supplier I know of who might need a VAT number is RS. Technically they don't sell to the general public, they're trade only, and this is probably for liability reasons: maybe they want to avoid the customer protection laws that apply in high street stores. It's been like that as long as I can remember. But if you work for a company that has a RS account, they'll happily sell you stuff for your own personal use.
Farnell and CPC are the same, and I don't think Rapid even needs an account. They take online credit card orders from anyone.
Disagree. I have a credit account (non-VAT-registered) with RS as an individual, and have a CC account with Farnell/CPC (all with free postage). Rapid, as you say, if far less bothered as they deal mainly with schools/colleges etc.
The only thing I've recently had problems with is buying quantities of citric acid for my wife to make elderflower cordial - the pharamacy here will only sell it in stupid 50gm packs and they ask you why you want it - It can be used as an acidifier to make heroin soluble in water for intravenous use . I ended up buying a kilo on eBay from an home brewing supplier for a fraction of the cost, no questions...

I've seen plenty of chemicals on eBay from time to time that shouldn't be there, like Industrial Methylated Spirits (you need a special licence) and Chloroform (an S1 poison I think).
Of all the chemical controls, I find the duty on ethanol the most annoying I think.
It's the only solvent where you know it wont matter if you breath in a some fumes, get it on your skin, or even swallow a bit! It even smell reasonably nice. It's also very good for cleaning cuts and grazes where it kills any germs and then evaporates. Worked a treat when I tried it once after a French friend said they always use it in France. It healed quicker than with antiseptic and/or a plaster. I imagine that without the duty it would be pretty cheap too!

I think what annoyed HMRC (*) most is that you were buying it by the barrel load
(*) For those outside the UK, HMRC = "Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs" - the bit we're interested in was formally known as "Customs & Excise" and who had more invasive powers than the police...

i see that they are clamping down on many of the chemicals used to make biodiesel for similar reasons.
On a side note, biodiesel happens to be great to run small generators on in an emergency, and contrary to what the Govt claim it is legal to make and use at home. Just don't forget to pay the taxes if you are using it in a vehicle, and be very careful as it can be volatile if made wrong or overheated.
there are ways to avoid the use of the restricted chemicals which for legal reasons will not be discussed here...
