Steve you are right that a thyratron has a deionization time but that only afects the rep rate not the pulse width. it is my understanding that in moast radar units the pulse width is controled by the LC of a PFN and not by the tube. Are you saying that like a SCR that a thyratron is to slow to give a proper pulse width that could be used for a tesla.

I am not shure how Richard Hull had his setup, I asume he used it in place of the spark gap. Do you Know if he is still with us?

I think so. Either that, or I'm saying that a PFN wouldn't generate a properly shaped pulse into a Tesla coil, because the load is a terrible mismatch.

Richard Hull was never a member of 4hv, you'll have to dig into the TCML and TCBOR archives...

thanks Steve, it may be true that other wave forms other than sinsotal may not work as well but as long as the rep is the same as the fundimental of the tesla or have simular spectral content you should have cupling. I would think that cupling and inpedance aside a tesla secondary should be sympathetic only to its fundimental and harmonics and reject all others. that being said a sidac interupter or spark gap is far from sinsotal. obviously the type of device you use will determin its type of use like igbt's and DRSSTC and tubes and VTTC's many pausible configurations can be used I believe that many types of tesla configurations like Mates new cone coil can be done.
