I suspect that some detergents could cause problems with mercury due to their sulfur content,
I'm unsure what is in ionic and non-ionic surfactants, detergents, aromas etc. but sulfur comes to mind.

My barometer project is at a complete standstill because;

. my gas torch is too pathetic to melt 3.5 mm wall thickness borosilicate tube,
. even my nephew's MAPP plumbers torch was not hot enough
(I want a "J" tube sealed at the top end using my 1.5 m long, 16 mm o.d. straight tube(s)

it would be easy enough for me to lash something together,
but if I can not use it reliably as a primary reference
in a presentable shed-proof enclosure, I see no point ... waiting for inspiration ...
(mercury and tubes safely stored)

. I bought two types of domestic aneroid barometer very cheaply via eBay
which are more than good enough for the ambient pressure measurements that I want,
for hobby chemistry mainly.
I may temporarily lash something together for low pressure measurements though.
At some point I may try distilling the mercury (under reduced pressure) to 'purify' it.

klugesmith, the site that you linked to has a photograph of their 'Analytical Laboratory'
... makes my shed look over equipped ! Link2

Well I've been watching lots (NPI) of mercury metal moving through ebay, but it's too soon to post a summary. Bought a brand new mercury tilt switch, on blister card for $1.89, among other switches hanging on the hooks at a Fry's store. Doodled mechanical detail ideas for 1-ohm resistance test cell and small (20-ml capacity) metal retort/condenser for vacuum distilling.

Breaking news is a real mercury oxifier up on ebay. Looks like the large model, made to process more than one 20-pound batch per day. Priced higher than my interest in owning one, but the pictures have taught me a lot.

One old reference is the text and image in rightmost column here:

I should mention that Bethlehem Apparatus Company is still big in the American mercury business, now including toxic material recovery and remediation.

I find people are only too happy to give me stuff containing mercury for free as they don't want it. I've recently been given two mercury rectifiers, one I've already identified, I have another
