There is something like 30mm of glass, and around 5mm of stainless steel between the input and output windows.
Since it effectively amplifies the image, there is no real reason to use it with x-ray sources capable of penetrating the entire length of the tube. It was designed with low x-ray flux and low kvp in mind.

i did have an idea, use a large B/W ccd sensor (the ones on old school junk 1/3" cameras work well) and put a peltier module on the back to cut down on noise.
might give a better image and also allow for distance viewing for safety reasons. perhaps also add a collimator on the input side?
