Nice coil MMC, but I suggest you read the first post in this thread, especially rule 5.

5. Power must be supplied from a battery. No AC source, sorry. Some would cheat with a HF supply. Battery source, IS part of the overall size equation.

and its still much bigger than mine...

also take a look at battery powered DRSSTC 12" output..

Update on my coil... Output up to >2" and I think I can add in some more HV bus Capacitance.. Although I will need a larger topload..

My smallest batterypowered isstc
frequency is 1,8Mhz

1265979234 2485 FT80032 Ja

the record was 13cm sparks

in the video the coil was powered by a 12V powersupply because my battreis were empty

Just wondering would it be just the size of the coil? or would it be who can make the smallest coil with the biggest sparks?

BTW: I love your coil I don't think I could make one much smaller cheesey

I like that. Smallest coil with the biggest sparks. Perhaps some ratio of height vs. spark length

Derek, how often does your DRSSTC fire? I was thinking the easiest way to get long sparks was with a DRSSTC, but you wouldn't get continuous sparks.

Ok, no simple answer here...

I have used a Pic microcontroller as the drive for a flyback converter. I also have An0 fed from a voltage divider from the Hv rail. It works like this...

The Pic has two states, charging and running. In charging mode the Pic gives the pulses for the flyback converter until AN0 is at a pre set level, which at the moment equates to 200V as thet is the rating of my bus caps.

When this level is reached the Pic enters a run mode and sends a burst of pulses to the enables of the driver. At present this is 12 pulses at around 2Khz.

The Pic then resumes charging mode.

The beauty of this setup is I can control everything with the software in the pic.

At present it gives a burst every 0.5 seconds, but this depends on the settings of voltage, repitition rate and number of repititions and tuning.. If the coil is out of tune you don't get the primary current as each bang dosn't discharge the bus cap as much, so it runs faster.

What is limiting the output of the coil is the size of the topload, I need a slightly larger topload to get better tuning. (or a really odd cap value as my primary is fixed) As soon as I get it properly tuned, then I can start increasing my 'on' times. I think I should be able to get 3-4", but the rep rate of the bursts will decrease.

Derek

I didn't run my switch mode converter off of the microcontroller, but I can see how that can simplify the circuit. I still have some left over surface mount parts, I may have to take a run at this.
