A simple circuit from my youth was to use a little DC PM/brush motor wired in series with the secondary of a speaker transformer. The primary would put out some pretty good sparks. This was a small tube radio-type speaker transformer, kind of hard to find these days though.

Maybe the little trigger transformer from a camera flash would work? I think they give out something like 4-6kV pulses, and they are really tiny.

Ive tried making a triggered spark gap in a potato gun chamber from a disposible camera flash... it sucked, worked alright (80% of the time) in air, but never worked to ignite the mixture. Had tungsten electrodes too. :) Is propane more insulating then air?

But just ask for a whole bag full of disposable cameras, move the transformer/transistor/resistors portion of the circuit from one onto a piece of prototyping board, then build a 10+ stage multiplier off the output of the transformer, using the 22nf foil caps (for the trigger circuit) and the HV diodes (on the output of the main transformer normally) Thats what I did for mine and its works pretty well, I think I have ~25 stages, but I suspect that it gets to a point of diminishing returns, and that is well below 25.

In my latest one though I just cheaped out and purchased a $15 stun gun, soldered leads to its output terminals, (dont alter the gap on them, it can overvolt its self) and put it in a plastic project box and put some Binding posts on for the output. Larger, but faster, and more 'scientific' looking then my taped up bundle of HV wire :)

unfortunately it's impossible to get free disposable cameras here in denmark and stunguns are illegal..

does anybody know where i can find a tutorial on making a pulse transformer myself?

How about a xenon flash tube trigger transformer, they can be tiny and are cheap.

remember you can generate the HV across a choke only, and need not have a transformer.

I have wound my own pulse coil, 10t pri, 2000t sec and I get 8Kv out wit a 0.22 microfarad cap.
I'll pm you some info if you would like

I have a tiny ignition coil from an ATV, it's about the size of a C or D cell, but it makes a nice spark when you discharge a capacitor though it. I got it to work at 12v with a 2uF cap, though it made much bigger sparks from discharging a photo flash cap though it...

EDIT: the spark in my avatar is from it.
