My scope was inherited from my grandfather, and it didn't have any ground clips, nor are the probes constructed in such a way as to suggest that ground clips are necessary. Until I ran across a reference to ground leads, I was using differential measurements for everything. Thus the 2 channel scope was a 1 channel scope, and I just lived with the noise that arose from the probe leads taking different paths to the front panel.
Since I discovered the source of the problem, I've been clipping alligator test leads between the exposed shield on the scope probes and circuit ground. It's still a kludge, but it works. Perhaps I should buy some cheap ebay scope probes.
