I don't have enough lifetime left to pursue all the things I imagine doing, so I need to get realistic, focus on a core set of pursuits and get rid of stuff I'm not likely to use.

That's exactly the state I'm in. The amount of stuff I've saved over the last few years is ridiculous - the problem is I will take something apart, and then just out of curiosity I will start google'ing the ICs and other components it contains. Obviously then I can't get rid of it because of all the ideas I got for things I could build with 'all the awesome parts it contains'.

I'm at the stage where I couldn't even begin to list all the things I've saved, because there is just too much. Occasionally I will look through boxes of things 'just for interest' and then start remembering why I saved various things. then it will go back into the box and be forgotten for another year.

I think a key point to note is that I don't really miss the few things I have had to throw away, like the pile of old VCRs which I wanted to keep for some reason or other. I could probably throw most things away and have forgotten about them within a couple of days.

...but they contain really cool ICs so I can't do that! cheesey

What I do is deside if the electronic device is worth dismantaling for its part. Ink jet printers for example have nothing good in them so I do not mess with them. When I do find something, I desolder the parts that I want. Since I like to do RF stuff, I usually remove inductors, NPO ciramics RF transistors, crystals and elec. Also, I keep some HV and other general purpus components too. Since I also do some SMT work, organizing SMT components is difficult. SMT ciramic capacitors are not labeled, how do you guys organize these.

I do not salvage smd caps/resistor (for like $20 you can get a complete set of resistors and caps off ebay that will save you trying to decide if the number is a 9 r a 6 (they use the same stamp just upside down), cleaning/sorting the parts etc. I have all of my SMD parts (a set of resistors, tantalum and ceramic capacitors) in a 2" binder, along with all of the other SMD components I have collected over the years, from LEDs to crystals to rf modems. I also broke down and got a set of leaded resistors/caps (it was about $60 for a set of 1/8watt and 1/4 watt resistors, ceramic and electrolytic caps, about 200 values with 5-10 components for each value, neatly sorted and labeled in compartmentalized trays) If I get a component that is known to by good I will sort it into the trays, and if I run out of a value I will add it to be ordered on my next mouser order.

My system for boards is that i have bags for HV goods (one for power resistors, one for hv caps, one for hv diodes, etc) that I sort general HV stuffs into. I then have a 20gal tub that I put the circuit boards that have useful components that may need to be salvaged at some point in. If I want to add a board to the box, I either need to throw away a board, not add anything, or strip board to make it smaller. The result is my tub is getting more and more densely packed with useful components smile

thanks for your help guys.
gave me some ideas, hopefully i can have one last go at those dead monitors then dump them.

btw does anyone have a spare LNB or two they'd like to forward in my general direction? :)
