 		looks like the bread was dropped through a vent, and shorted out the busbar... at least thats what the article suggests.

 		I guess they should have done conductivity measurements on objects that randomly fall from the sky, then they could have prepared for this by putting a grating on the vent. That thing costs how much, and they can't afford a grate? I'm sure they have grates, so I can't believe it came in through a vent.

A more likely scenario is that there is an Al Qaeda operative working as a technician, and he discovered the power of half eaten sandwiches. Look out world! Injuries due to sandwich attacks are projected to increase by 34 thousand percent!

Quantum tunneling, clearly.

I assume the bread led to a short of some kind, which would in turn lead to protection circuits kicking in and shutting down the high voltage. Why there was no alert until temperatures started to rise, I do not know.

 		I used to work at CERN in the 1980s - The power, at least to the French side, came over the Jura from the North.

We were always having power problems as the pylons were continually struck by lightning from electric storms (of which there were a lot).
