Your secondary looks great so far, but make sure you use the minwax polyurethane that says "Clear Gloss" on the can and not "Clear Semi Gloss" Sometimes hardward stores only carry the semi gloss. I once coated a secondary with 15 coats of the semi gloss, and I ended up just throwing the secondary away because it wasn't shiny at all.

Good luck

We're always our worst critics, Arcs, and will see a tiny blemish that the eyes of others just pass over. Your secondary looks smart as paint to me, son, and in any case, dogs aren't always obedient, but they don't tell lies very well. Would your dog be looking on in admiration if your coil was a total turkey? He'd have snuffled off in total embarrassment, and pretend that he was someone else's dog, wouldn't he? Proof of a good secondary, if ever one were needed, I'd say. smile

That is very kind of you to say, Harry! I appreciate that very much.

The caps have not come yet, and the secondary may actually turn out bad, because of the last coat, unfortunately. The polyurethane lid did not close, which i did not know. So, it got somewhat thick. So, the last coat was a bit messy and uneven, and the next coat, if i do another with this same can, will be worse. Oh well, the secondary will function fine.

Once that secondary is finished, i will not have too much to do before i can do my little low power tests. So far, this has been the cheapest project i have ever done that i was serious about, with $0 out of my pocket, and 32 dollars generously donated by my parents.

EDIT: Sorry about the double post, i thought my last post was at 9am, but it was pm. About 8 hours too early... frown

So, i finished the secondary yesterday. I did my 1000 grit sand, with water all over the former. It helps make the sand paper flexible, it is supposed to make it last longer, and that is how i have always made my homemade glass beads look better.

I sanded the thing for about 1 and a half hours, which resulted in:
1
Take that, 'life time carbide' sand paper!

The polyurethane was almost gone, because most of it turned into 'poly skin'. Just a thick sheet of gel-like poly. The polyurethane that was under the gel was still liquid, but i got a new can. I should have a long time ago. I did not realize that my polyurethane was so thick! It was more than a year old, i used it for my last secondary. This new polyurethane is many times less viscous that the other stuff. That would explain the uneven coats, and the scratches from sand paper that did not get filled in.

It is still uneven, and not as nice as i wanted, but i am happy about it. Either way, it may just get a topload to secondary strike :P.

Anyway.

I had fingerprints on it when i took the pictures, not sure if you can see them.

Yay, you can see the reflection of the cement floor.

So, in the end, i went through about a dollar worth of foam brushes (10 cents each), and well over half a quart of polyurethane. The coil has gained a bit of weight wink

My buss/doubler caps came in yesterday. The are CDE 101c113T250DF2B 11,000uf 250vdc caps. These are low ESR, and pretty much identical to the 550C series from Cornell Dubilier, but these are lower voltage, and higher temperature.

Need to finish up the bridge, get some DC blocking capacitors for the gate driver as well as some decoupling caps, and finish some soldering connections, then i can test.

Edit: Now my problem is figuring out how i will set up the bridge. Mainly the buss caps. Time will tell :D

Heh agree. I had a hard choice of red or green. For me ersonally, I'd want blue or red. So red it was. Both me and arcs use the same varnish. One thing I didn't know was that I should sand it to shine it up. I just left mine as is, no sanding :(. Isn't reflective. Will have to give that a try! Either way, all is looking good on your coil there, arcstarter! I need to make a winder that's step controlled, I recently did mine with a motor but stopes halfway due to crap connections. It helped but kick speed was horrible. So I hand coiled it under a hour, 900 turns. Even did my 2ft of24awg in a hour. I find by hand fast and easy, never took more than a hour. Sure motors help though!

Keep us updated as always :D
