Thanks for the clarification on the zener diodes. I changed out the 12v zeners for 9v ones as i realised my atx psu puts out <12v on the 12v rail. At this point my zvs setup is working but seems to be quite weak compared to the ones I've seen around 4hv.
Another observation i've made: I can only get arcs from one of my flybacks, a monitor LOPT with 4+4 wound on. With ~3.5uF of resonant capacitors I get ~55kHz and some arcs that start around 5mm.

Other flybacks (tv and monitor) produce no results with the same or a 5+5 primary. Are LOPT very sensitive to frequency with this circuit? should I be grounding the HV return pins or something?
