Cheers Z28, I'll try raising the secondary.

Teravolt, Although the driver board and halfbridge are from the minibrute the resonator is considerably larger (I believe it's the design in the DRSSTCII book by the same author). Hopefully audio:deviant will come on and clarify things.

We've got most test equipment between us: 20meg scope, sigal gens, power suplies various multimeters.

Thanks,

Doug

hello Doug86, I did not relise that the 42l3332 caps were so expensive thease days at Allied if audio:deviant plans to add caps to his mmc the 942C20P15k are probibly saperior at 1/4 the price at

the only down side is you guys will have to buy 50 it looks like. maby others can find a good source of caps if that is the route you will be taking

Is 10kvdc really not enough for a primary cap? James took one of the parallel pairs off the mmc (to give 0.132uF) and added the larger topload.

At the end of the vid the breaker went.

Well done. Well it looks closer to tune. How are the fets? Definatly just needs a little bit of tinkering. What is the primary frequency and current?

very nice coil!

how much is your DC bus voltage? 200V or 400V?

Don't forget that if you plan on having the coil make large sparks, then the resonant frequency of the primary circuit is going to have to be lower than the resonant frequency of the secondary resonator. Depending on spark size, your primary circuit Fo might have to be 20% lower.

Why is that?

Why is that?

As soon as the topload produces streamers, the conductive plasma increase the effective size, therefore capacitance, of the topload, reducing the secondary Fres. If you do what SteveC says, then that effect brings the resonant frequencies closer together and it works better.

Do programs like javatc factor that effect into their calculations?

No. If you were shooting a rifle, it would be called "aiming off for the breeze". TCs aren't all science, there's a bit of art and a bit of luck involved too.
